In Activity 1, I explored multiple potential directions within 3D design by researching current industry trends, emerging technologies, and relevant tools/software. I investigated areas such as AR/VR, 3D game and interactive experiences, AI-assisted modelling, and hybrid 2D/3D visuals, while brainstorming possible project applications for each. This phase allowed me to map out a broad range of opportunities before narrowing my focus.
In Activity 2, I reflected on my initial research and peer feedback to refine my direction into 2 stronger, more manageable paths. I evaluated how each option aligned with my interests, technical growth, and workload for the term, ultimately beginning to shape a clearer and more structured project proposal grounded in both research and iteration.
After completing Activities 1 & 2, I have decided that what I want to do this term is pure exploration of Spline, including Hana (for interactivity) and Spline’s web integration capabilities, with the goal of building upon my existing knowledge of the software and the foundations I developed in 2nd year of IXD, and learning how to integrate 3D models into the web, with the aim of creating high-fidelity, motion-driven web experiences.
Developing a 3-stage Action Research framework: building foundational 3D skills, adding interactivity, and integrating the design into the web, supported by storyboarding, wireframing, and user testing. The staged approach emphasizes iterative refinement and increasing complexity rather than unstructured experimentation.
Looking at Project 1 as a whole, especially the research I documented in Activity 1, I realized how transformative this phase was despite how time-consuming it felt. Although I began with a strong instinct to pursue 3D design, I was not fully aware of the breadth of emerging trends shaping the field. Exploring these directions didn’t just help me make decisions: it broadened the way I think about what’s possible within 3D design. What initially felt like an overwhelming amount of research ultimately helped me refine my interests, uncover possibilities I had not previously considered, and approach my final concept with greater awareness of both industry context and technical potential.
Moving forward, especially after receiving feedback from peers regarding my project concept, I aim to define a stronger central direction, be more selective about the interactions I implement, and consider accessibility from the outset. My 3-stage Action Research plan (progressing from foundational skill-building to interactivity and web integration) provides a structured framework for this process. This approach will allow me to continue experimenting while ensuring the work remains purposeful, cohesive, and grounded in user experience.
